ABUTILON MEGAPOTAMICUM
Abutilon Megapotamicum is one of the few species plants generally available. Its tall arching, sometimes sprawling, habit makes it ideal as a subject for a warm wall or fence. Distinctive yellow -petalled flowers protruding from an inflated red calyx dangle along the branches, making for an eye-catching sight when in full throttle.
Hardy to around -5C or perhaps a little more. Sun or semi-shade. Any reasonable soil. To 200 cm or more.
Native to South America, found in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina in high mountain valleys. A variegated type is also in circulation. Much hybridised to produce new and distinct cultivars.
Abutilon Megapotamicum is a half hardy evergreen shrub with maple like foliage and pendant yellow and red flowers in spring, summer and autumn.
