Apfelsine is the German word for orange (the fruit, that is), so it’s no surprise that that was the name bestowed on this variety, which sports large open bell shaped flowers of richest, well, orange. Abutilon Emperor is a tall vigorous shrub with a profusion of deep crimson red flowers throughout the growing season. An old variety, dating back to around 1880, and probably not the same plant as the one marketed as Red Emperor, particularly in Australia. Best protected from frost, so needs a very sheltered site or growing in a pot, which can be taken in if necessary in winter.

Estella’s Little BIrd is a relatively new arrival on these shores, hailing from the USA. It’s a Megapotamicum hybrid but has a nice compact upright habit, throwing out plenty of branches which are decorated along their length with dainty clear yellow flowers throughout the summer months. We like the flared edges on the petals.

A relatively recent US introduction, Gerdemann’s Red is a compact cultivar that produces copious quantities of small but perfectly formed pendant flowers in a shade best described as tomato red. It clearly has megapotamicum in its makeup so should have a good degree of cold tolerance. Forms a nice well-branched bushy shrub.

Golden Fleece is an old variety of abutilon, dating back to the 19th century (it is mentioned in a nursery catalogue of 1887 as a new introduction), bearing some resemblance to its fellow Victorian Canary Bird, but differing in having flowers of a richer, deeper shade of yellow and some purplish colouration to the stems. It is a vigorous grower and prolific bloomer, flowering for most months in the calendar year, given the right conditions.

The name Golden Terrracotta suggests colours from the warmer side of the colour palette, and so it is, with the flowers generally being a rich golden shade with reddish veining. We say generally, because quite often flowers will take on a deeper hue, closer to terracotta than gold, making for an arresting sight when you have blooms of differing shades on the plant at the same time.

John Thompson is a fine upstanding well-branched shrub with lots of large open bell shaped flowers in a striking shade of sunny golden yellow. Abutilon Kentish Belle is a popular Megapotamicum hybrid of long standing, whose tall arching branches are decorated with dangling orangey yellow flowers with a dark red calyx. Given its habit, it is a good choice for growing against a wall or fence or over a pergola. Known to be hardier than most.

Abutilon Linda Vista Peach is an attractive cultivar, with apricot-coloured flowers (shouldn’t that be peach?) tinged with red in the centres. Probably late 20th century. Linda Vista is the F1 seed production company based in Costa Rica and founded by Claude Hope, who developed the Bella series, so we assume this is one of his. Compact in habit, so good in a patio pot.

Lucky Lantern Tangerine is a compact cultivar, originally raised in Australia and part of a series comprising four colour variations, with a lovely bushy habit and a proliferation of open bell shaped flowers in a striking shade of peachy orange or, as the name would suggest, tangerine. Marion is one of the very best orange-flowered cultivars, sporting large open well veined flowers in a vivid strong shade of said colour. Abutilon Old Rose Belle sounds lovely, and it is, with open soft pink flowers with prominent veining dangling among the jagged heart shaped foliage throughout most of the year. It will remain fairly compact so makes for a good potted specimen. We believe it to be a cultivar originally developed by long-standing US nursery Logee’s, probably in the mid 20th century.

Abutilon Orange Hot Lava is a Megapotanicum hybrid and sports a multitude of flared and fluted flowers with petals in volcanic orange streaked with noticeable red veining. The maroon sepals and dark stems make for a very distinctive look overall.

Abutilon Pictum var. Thompsonii has as its principal characteristic divided dark green foliage conspicuously mottled and splashed with creamy yellow variegation, among which hang open bell shaped salmon pink blooms. Not a particularly prolific bloomer, but the foliage makes up for that. An old and popular variety.

Russell’s Dwarf is, as the name suggests, a more compact cultivar, growing to around a metre in height. The striking arrowshaped leaves display mottled creamy yellow variegation, and the medium sized open bell-shaped flowers are coloured a strong crimson red. Laurence Hatch’s 2013 cultivar guide lists it but doesn’t offer any suggestions as to origin.

A very beautiful cultivar, Abutilon Satin Pink Belle has large bell shaped flowers with slightly incurved petals, so creating a, rounded, almost spherical shape, all in a clear rosy pink with noticeable whitish pink veining. As lovely as its name suggests.

Snowfall, as the name suggests, has medium sized flowers of pure bridal white, exceptional in their clarity. It’s a fairly compact grower with a pleasingly bushy and well branched habit. The earliest reference to this cultivar appears to be mid 1990s on the website of US nursery Logee’s. Now hard to find but worth seeking out.

Souvenir de Bonn is an old variety of abutilon, popular in the Victorian era for the variegation of its maple-like leaves, which are deep green edged with cream. The veined orange flowers are striking in contrast to the foliage, though not as numerous as in some other hybrids. Its vigorous upright habit makes this a splendid feature plant, whether in the ground or in a large container.

A fairly new introduction, Abutilon Tango is one of the Dancing Ladies series created by Steve Yandall in the early 2000s and bred for hardiness and vigour. Tango forms a tall arching shrub with dangling flared bell shaped flowers in an eye-catching shade of flaming orange veined with red.

Ventnor Gold is a sport of Abutilon x Milleri with particularly large golden yellow flowers, dicovered and developed at Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight in the mid 1990s. The trailing habit means it ideally requires support against a warm wall or fence. The variety was thought lost to cultivation post 2005 but a plant was discovered ten years or so later, from which a new generation of this cultivar has been created.

Reputedly the only double-flowered cultivar and certainly rarely seen in the UK, Abutilon Victorian Lady is a vigorous upright shrub with bell shaped flowers made up of ruffled soft pink double petals around yellow stamens. Very striking and highly desirable.

Abution Vitifolium is the hardiest of these lovely shrubs, good for growing against a wall or as a free-standing specimen in a sheltered spot. Showy saucer shaped mauve to lilac flowers are produced spring into early summer and sometimes later. It is deciduous, so loses its felted grey green leaves in winter. Now known as Corynabutilon Vitifolium.

Rob has grown this lovely shrub in locations as different as against the warm wall of a stone-built cottage in Devon and as a free standing specimen in a Cambridgeshire garden (and there it can get pretty cold in winter!).
